Dos And Don’ts For Sensitive Skin

Pinterest Google+

Sensitive skin refers to a type of skin that is susceptible to irritation and redness far more than any other skin type. This skin type reacts to several ingredients found in skincare and makeup products, especially if it’s chemical-based, as well as naturally-occurring irritants in the air.

However, with the right knowledge and conscious effort, this type of skin can be saved. Here are a few dos and don’ts for sensitive skin.

Dos  For Sensitive Skin

Hypo-allergenic Makeup and Skincare Products

To avoid introducing external irritants to the skin, those with sensitive skin should use hypo-allergenic makeup and skincare products. These products are tested and certified by dermatologists to be allergy- and irritant-free and thus ‘safe.’

Use Fragrance-free Products

Along with the packaging of a product, most of us are attracted to the fragrance that a product carries. However, those with sensitive skin should remember that even mild fragrances can irritate their skin by compromising the skin’s natural protective barrier. Instead, they should invest in products that are fragrance free.

Maintain the Moisturize Balance

Those with sensitive skin should ensure that they moisturize their skin well. This skin type is often found to be dry to the touch.

The dryness can, in turn, irritate the sensitive skin a great deal, rendering it red and itchy. Introducing the moisture acts a protective barrier on the skin against the irritants.

Do Give Kitchen Recipes a Chance

Sensitive skin can exhibit varying degrees of sensitivity. If your skin is extremely sensitive, consider using kitchen recipes to take care of your skin. For example, use whole milk to cleanse your skin and moisturize your skin using a mixture of glycerine and rosewater.

Don’ts for Sensitive Skin

Sensitive skin requires extra care than other skin types. Therefore, it’s important to follow gentle and safe skincare practices and use products that are specifically formulated for sensitive skin.

As mentioned before, use products that are gentle and fragrance free. Additionally, don’t get carried away with washing your skin several times a day. Instead, splash water on your face to get rid of excess oil, sweat, and dirt.

Don’t assume that ‘chemical-free’ Products will not Irritate your Skin

It’s a misconception that ‘chemical-free’ products will always be safe and irritation free to use. Many skins can react even to natural and organic ingredients. It is, therefore, recommended to either do a patch test on the inside of your elbow, or purchase a sample size product to see its effects.

Hot Showers

While hot showers can be most relaxing after a tiring day, those with sensitive skin should avoid it. Hot showers can strip the skin of its moisture and oil balance, leading to a dry and irritated state.

Don’t Forget the Benefits of a Healthy Diet

Food rich in Vitamin B are known to soothe sensitive skin by reducing drynessand irritability of the skin. You can introduce Vitamin B in your system either by consuming B-complex capsules daily, or by eating food products such as salmon, tuna, almonds, whole grains, and low-fat dairy products.

By listening to your skin and pampering it with the right products, you can ensure that your skin is always in top condition despite its sensitivity.
